Starting a Garden is a Lot Like Playing in the Dirt
Every adult should grow a garden of his own at least once. Many people find a lot of happiness in caring for and growing a garden. Even if you haven’t got any gardening experience you shouldn’t have any problems growing some basic plants. There are so many different types of information available today that even brand new gardeners should be able to learn how to grow a new garden. Of course gardening isn’t super simple. It can sometimes be very hard work! The following are some tips that you can use if you are thinking about starting your own garden.
Look around your space–be as critical as you can! If you don’t have very much space outdoors for gardening you are just going to have to settle for an indoor garden and the plants that you can grow inside until you find some place that is better for outdoor gardening. For people who have yards, their task becomes deciding just how much of those yards should be dedicated to gardening. The space that is available will help you figure out just what you can grow and how extensive your garden will be. For example: a small garden kept inside is not going to be a good place to grow vegetables, fruit or anything that grows on a vine.
Loosen up your soil by digging into the ground. Make sure gardening conditions are right or digging could be a bad idea.
Don’t dig unless you have moist soil conditions. It should be moist enough that you can form it into a ball with your hands when you dig it up from the ground. If the ground is too moist the ball won’t break when you drop it. To turn the soil and increase the air flow through it spading forks and spades are the best tools.
You might need more than just a packet of seeds and dirt if you have never started your own garden. If you purchase plants which have already begun sprouting, your may have better luck. If you do this, your main job will be maintaining the garden as it begins to thrive. Your worries about whether the plants will grow will decrease. You only have to worry about how to keep them alive. You might have better luck with seedlings next year, when you have gained some experience. Another reason for starting with sprouted plants is: some plants grow year after year regardless of new seeds being planted – the bulbs simply remain dormant until blooming season of the following year.
Beginning a garden is hard work but tons of fun. Your garden will be bountiful if you first take some time to learn about gardening. Enjoy the time in your garden! It’s a good reason to play and spend time outside!
